In the north of the Peloponnese, in the eastern part of the prefecture of Achaia, is the former province and current municipality of Aigialia. An area of significant geological interest, rich history, significant tradition and continuity in viticulture and winemaking. Before the descent of the Ionians, the entire Peloponnese was called Aigialeia, subsequently limited only to its north. The vine and wine, throughout this centuries-long journey, have been and are an integral and worshipped part of everyday life.
In ancient Aegira, the annual miracle of the ephemeral vine took place, a unique Dionysian cult celebration with strong parallels between human life and the journey of wine, from the vine to the glass.
Pausanias, in his travelogues, characterizes the area around Felli as skillful in planting vines. In the large settlements of lower Italy and Sicily, important cities were founded that still bear the same name today, while the vines that the settlers carried with them began to record the great journey of Greek varieties to the West.
The unique geological relief of the area is shaped by a multitude of factors, the most important of which are the northern exposure to the Gulf of Corinth, the existence of three large mountains on its ''back'' that prevent the arrival of warm southern winds, the proximity to the sea, the intense seismic activity, the 7 rivers that start from the mountains and end in the Gulf of Corinth, the new soils of the Pleistocene era and the limestone slab that is found in a large part of the zone and determine a unique cool Mediterranean climate.
High-altitude vineyards usually shaped in traditional bowls, a large number of cultivated varieties, a high percentage of organic farming, far from groundwater, and proximity to urban areas create a distinctive green ecosystem.
The river at whose sources Achilles was baptized to become immortal (Krathis) continues to have the cleanest waters in the country even today, while the neighbouring region of Kalavryta has the lowest light pollution and the largest telescope on the Balkan Peninsula is located there.
An area with a coastline of 50 kilometres, an average altitude of 860 meters with an average slope of 30% is home to some of the most beautiful vineyards in the world. A large part of eastern Aigialia and its vineyards are located within the national and UNESCO protected geopark of Helmos-Vouraikos.
I feel blessed that my cosmic coordinates are in this amazing region, where it generously gives us beautiful quality threads to weave...
...the wines of our dreams.
